“They do Grow Up! A family’s journey to build a good life for their son after graduation” & “Resource Overview for All Ages”
Rosemary Alexander PhD.
Texas Parent 2 Parent Transitions Specialist
When your child is 3 or 6 or even 10, it’s hard to imagine that he or she will really grow and mature into an adult! But the transition phase comes quickly and families must be ready for the days after their child graduates from public school. This talk will present why planning is key by telling about our family’s efforts to create a good life for our son Will as an adult. It will also include ideas, resources and tools for working on the future of your son or daughter.
Biography Rosemary Alexander, PhD.- I have worked with families of children with disabilities for nearly 30 years, most recently at Austin Independent School District, where I provided support and information to hundreds of families concerning special education issues, resources, and transition to adulthood. I retired from AISD in 2011 and now work for Texas Parent to Parent’s Pathways to Adulthood program. Through this program I have traveled all across Texas giving workshops and presentations on transition, with a focus on helping families develop plans for their children after graduation. My experience with my 32-year old son, who has significant disabilities, has taught me about the gifts that people with disabilities have to offer and based on that experience, I work for high quality of life for my son and other families’ sons and daughters after graduation. I have an MA and PhD in English, acquired in my pre-disability life!
Evaluation from 2011 Conference Transition Institute facilitated by Rosemary Alexander: “The strongest feature of the Institute was Rosemary’s expertise & personal experience. Also the parent presentations encouraged us. Comprehensive overview such as this of all transition issues should be mandated for all parents and not optional for only those who choose to seek this out! Lost opportunities cannot be recovered.”

Understanding Guardianship & Less Restrictive Alternatives – Legal alternatives to guardianship exist to assist people with disabilities in decision
making that are less restrictive & do not remove individual rights. A variety of Texas groups that represent people with disabilities, seniors and the legal community are collaborating to develop policy recommendations to improve the guardianship system & promote alternatives to guardianship.
